New generation of industrial campuses focuses on sustainability and user comfort
Pioneer in sustainable production campuses
Urbanity Campus Tachov, which has been gradually expanding in the Plzeň Region near the German border, became the first production campus in the Czech Republic to receive the prestigious BREEAM Communities certification for sustainable urban districts and public spaces – with the highest rating in Central and Eastern Europe. This achievement confirms that industrial campuses can be an integral part of urban environments, delivering value not only to tenants but also to local residents. “In industrial development, innovation in materials and energy efficiency is key. At Urbanity, we believe industrial campuses can be designed with environmental responsibility while offering comfort to users. We combine architectural distinctiveness with renewable energy sources. Our goal is to create campuses that meet new regulatory standards and respond to the needs of modern companies and their employees – similar to what people are already used to in office environments,”says Roland Hofman, co-founder and CEO of Urbanity.
Awards confirm quality and innovation
Thanks to its long-term focus on sustainability and social responsibility, Urbanity has ranked among the top five Czech companies in the SME category of the ESG ranking published by the Association of Social Responsibility in cooperation with Forbes Czech Republic. This prestigious ranking evaluates companies based on their approach to sustainability and integration of ESG principles into daily operations.
Urbanity Campus Tachov has also received several other awards, including a prize from the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade as part of the “Building of the Year of the Plzeň Region” competition for the GAMA building. The jury praised the high-quality façade design, which stands out from current industrial trends, modern technical solutions including rooftop photovoltaics, battery storage, and intelligent management systems, as well as the surrounding area with generous green spaces and relaxation zones.
Urbanity Campus Tachov: next-generation industrial site
The Tachov campus represents a new generation of industrial sites that make full use of brownfield land. It runs on green energy from solar panels, which cover up to 40% of the campus’s energy needs. Investments in renewables have led to the expansion of the local power plant to a capacity of 5 MWp, making it the largest rooftop solar power plant in the Czech Republic. The installation of a 1.4 MWh battery storage system enables highly efficient energy management. But the campus is not just about sustainability and energy efficiency – it’s a place where work and everyday life intersect. In addition to a modern working environment, it offers relaxation zones, on-site medical care, and a childcare facility for preschool-aged children. Future plans include a grocery store, residential villas, a kindergarten, and, in cooperation with the local municipality, even a hotel – currently missing in nearby Tachov.
Urbanity Campus Bruntál: new chapter in regional development
Following its success in Tachov, Urbanity has launched another ambitious project – Urbanity Campus Bruntál, which will bring over 55,000 m² of new production and logistics space to the Moravian-Silesian Region, supporting local employment and regional development. Last year, the company obtained a building permit for the reconstruction and expansion of a site in a former industrial zone in Bruntál. Between the roads to Opava and Krnov, a new production campus will emerge with new buildings and comprehensive infrastructure, including connections to surrounding roads.
Thanks to close cooperation with the city, Urbanity has already begun work on new local transport infrastructure, including a brand-new access road to the existing industrial zone. The goal is to divert transit traffic away from residential areas, significantly calming traffic for local residents. “We’re proud to contribute to Bruntál’s development by building a modern industrial campus that opens doors to global opportunities and allows local talent to engage in international projects. We also aim to support the area by modernizing transport infrastructure – shielding residential zones from truck traffic and improving quality of life with a new public transport stop,” said Roland Hofman, explaining how Urbanity puts its ESG commitments into practice.
Future of industrial development
Urbanity’s approach shows that industrial development can be sustainable, aesthetically valuable, and beneficial to local communities. The group focuses on revitalizing brownfields in areas with a tradition of manufacturing, closely tied to how local communities function. A strong emphasis is placed on sustainable technologies and employee comfort –still more common in office environments than in industrial ones.
“Our strategy is to build next-generation industrial campuses that meet the highest standards while creating value for society. We aim to do things in a way that has a real positive impact on local communities and the employees working in our campuses. We strive not only to mitigate environmental harm but, where possible, to generate a positive impact,” Hofman summarizes Urbanity’s vision.
With projects like Urbanity Campus Tachov and Urbanity Campus Bruntál, industrial campuses are becoming places where work and everyday life blend, and where sustainability and comfort go hand in hand. Urbanity is setting a new standard for industrial development in the Czech Republic and across Central and Eastern Europe.
