Urbanity Leads a New Generation of Sustainable Industrial Campuses

In a recent Q&A, Roland Hofman, CEO of Urbanity, discussed how they are shaping the industry with their spectacular work. Urbanity prioritizes sustainability, thoughtful architectural design, and employee well-being. With flagship projects such as the award-winning Urbanity Campus Tachov and the soon-to-launch Urbanity Campus Bruntál, the company is reshaping the role of industrial spaces — aiming to serve not only business tenants but also the surrounding communities.

“In industrial development, innovation in materials and energy efficiency is essential,” says Roland Hofman, co-founder and CEO of Urbanity. “We believe industrial campuses can be designed with respect for the environment while still offering comfort for users. Our goal is to deliver projects that meet ESG standards and reflect the expectations of modern companies and their employees — with solutions that are both custom-tailored and effective.”

Urbanity has gained national and international attention for its commitment to sustainability. The Tachov campus near the German-Czech border is the first industrial site in the Czech Republic to receive BREEAM Communities certification — and it currently holds the highest rating in Central and Eastern Europe. This commitment has earned Urbanity several awards, including Best of Realty, Estate Awards, and recognition from the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade, particularly for the GAMA building in Tachov, praised for its innovative façade and technical solutions such as rooftop solar panels, battery storage, intelligent management systems, and green landscaping. In 2024, Urbanity was also ranked among the Top 5 Czech SMEs in the ESG ranking organized by the Association of Social Responsibility and Forbes, highlighting companies that actively integrate sustainability principles into their operations.

The Tachov campus represents a new approach to industrial development, built on repurposed brownfield land and powered by renewable energy. A rooftop solar installation, now expanded to 5 MWp, covers up to 40% of the site’s energy needs — making it the largest such system in the Czech Republic — while a 1.4 MWh battery system improves efficiency and supports tenants during peak demand. But Hofman stresses that Tachov is not just about energy systems. “We designed Tachov to be a place where work and everyday life intersect,” he explains. “Beyond modern workspaces, we provide healthcare facilities, relaxation zones, and even a daycare center for children. Looking ahead, we’re developing additional services like grocery stores, residential villas, a kindergarten, and a hotel — amenities that are currently missing in Tachov, and we’re doing this in collaboration with the local municipality.”

Building on Tachov’s success, Urbanity has now launched Urbanity Campus Bruntál in the Moravian-Silesian Region near the Polish-Czech border. The project will add over 55,000 m² of manufacturing and logistics space, designed to stimulate local employment and regional economic growth. ,,We’re proud to contribute to Bruntál’s development by creating a modern manufacturing campus that connects local talent with international companies,” Hofman says. “But we’re also focused on the bigger picture — improving local transport infrastructure, building a new access road, and introducing a public transit stop to divert freight traffic away from residential areas, improving the daily lives of local residents.”

Urbanity’s approach emphasizes that industrial development can be more than just functional buildings. By focusing on sustainability, design, and community engagement, the company aims to set a new standard in the sector. ,,Our strategy is to build next-generation manufacturing campuses that deliver long-term value to society,” Hofman concludes. “We want to minimize environmental impact and, wherever possible, create lasting added value for the regions we operate in — projects that benefit not only companies but also the communities and people around them.”
